Advanced Technology Center
In 2005, Lycoming created its new on-site research and development facility, the Advanced Technology Center (ATC). The ATC, a "center of excellence" for innovation, is part of Lycoming’s vision to be the premier aviation engine company, recognized for products, innovation and service that exceed the expectations of our customers.
Lycoming is an operating unit of Textron Systems, a provider of advanced technology and innovative solutions that meet the needs of the defense and aerospace industries. Lycoming’s ATC is tied into Systems’ ASC (Advanced Solutions Center) and shares its focuses on innovation and product development.
The ATC is located in our Williamsport facility where cutting-edge technology, R&D, and advancements in engine designs, parts, and materials are the focus of Lycoming engineers and the experienced Lycoming workforce.
Thunderbolt Engines exemplifies the innovative spirit of Lycoming’s ATC as well as its goal to provide multiple engine configuration options, based on the specific needs of individual aircraft builders.
Thunderbolt’s power-plant solutions for experimental aircraft range from the rugged O-235 to the legendary IO-720. Customers choose from a variety of available fuel systems, ignition systems, and performance enhancements including component balancing, cylinder flow matching, increased compression, tuned induction, and turbocharging. To personalize your very special engine, the ATC offers optional finishing touches including chrome and custom colors.
