Lycoming flies into Aero Friedrichshafen 2009

Friedrichshafen, Germany - Lycoming flew into Aero Friedrichshafen 2009 - the largest air show in Europe - to show off its iE2 integrated electronic engine and its soon to be certified IO-233-LSA light sport engine. It's the debut in Europe for the engines that were the talk of EAA Airventure in Oshkosh, Wis., in July 2008.

Lycoming also flexed its technological muscles by taking part in two panels: "Lycoming Engines" Perspective of the Piston Aviation Fuel Supply" and "Aircraft propulsion today and tomorrow: Current global economic & safety opportunities and challenges in GA." The latter panel was by invitation-only, sponsored by the 450-member German Aviation Writers Association, which called Lycoming "the leading manufacturer of classic GA engines."

"Friedrichshafen is the Oshkosh of Europe, but it's different" said Ian Walsh, senior vice president and general manager. "The European market is more focused on the light sport platform and concerned with alternative fuels issues. As a manufacturer with a global sales, service and distribution network, we will continue to make our presence known there and connect with customers.

Both the IO-233-LSA and the iE2 are capable of running alternative fuels, so they drew steady interest from what organizers called one of the largest opening day crowds in its history.

The panels, one industry focused and one media focused, were a part of Lycoming's efforts to educate the industry on fuels issues and how they impact manufacturers as well as consumers. Michael Kraft, vice president of research, development and engineering, took part in both.

"The fuels issue is a complex mix of economic, geographic and regulatory concerns," he said. "If the industry's goal is to have one fuel available worldwide for general aviation, there will have to be agreement on the standards, as well as the performance tradeoffs that would come with a more widely available alternative to the current high octane avgas."

Kraft said that educating the industry on these issues is key to developing the products needed in the future.

More than 7,000 visitors attended the opening day, a 40 percent increase over opening day in 2007, the last year the event was held. Organizers expect more than 50,000 visitors by the end of the show.
