Jon Sharp Ups the Ante in Reno Behind Lycoming Thunderbolt Engine
Reno, Nevada - Sept. 16, 2009 - Jon Sharp upped the ante at the Reno National Championship Air Races in Reno, Nev., by shattering last year's record qualifying pace behind his Lycoming six-cylinder TIO-540 Thunderbolt engine.
Sharp clocked in at 412.554 mph during on his second lap of qualifying on Wednesday to set a new Super Sport class qualifying record for the second year in a row. In 2008 qualifying Sharp set the record by reaching 409.297 mph. He actually beat that record twice Wednesday, reaching 410.596 mph on his first lap for an average speed of 411.575 mph in qualifying.
Heat 1A is Thursday, Sept. 17, with subsequent heats on Friday and Saturday. The Gold National Championship Air Race is Sunday, Sept. 20.
Sharp is seeking his fourth straight Super Sport Class National Championship. He won his third last year when he broke the race record with a speed of 392 mph and the single heat record with a speed of 393 mph.
