Matt Chapman Receives Lycoming Thunderbolt Engine

Competition Series Engine Delivered

Reno Air Races, Reno, NV - September 13, 2006Lycoming Engines, a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, announced the delivery of a new Competition Series Thunderbolt Engine to aerobatic champion, Matt Chapman.

Matt received an experimental high performance AEIO-580 from Lycoming’s Advanced Technology Center. The engine was configured to the specific operational and installation requirements of Chapman’s CAP 231 aircraft. This Thunderbolt Competition Series engine dramatically improves the aircraft’s horsepower-to-weight ratio, resulting in higher airspeeds and enhanced overall performance.

“My new Thunderbolt Engine is the smoothest and most powerful engine I have ever flown behind; it’s smooth beyond anything I’ve ever felt,” stated Matt Chapman. “The power is awesome! There was a noticeable increase in airspeed. And, Lycoming even painted my engine to match my airplane – Purple Power!”

Representing the specialized non-certified engine capability now available through Lycoming’s Thunderbolt Engines, this Competition Series AEIO-580 engine delivers the best power-to-weight ratio available in its category. The 583 cubic-inch displacement, 6-cylinder engine is based on the same platform developed for Mike Jones, a Lycoming sponsored Reno air racer.

“At Thunderbolt Engines, our goal is to exceed customer expectations. The enthusiastic response we received from Matt following his first flight behind his new engine was very gratifying. We strive to elicit this type of reaction from all of our customers,” stated Jon A. Delamarter, Thunderbolt Engines Manager. “At Oshkosh, we enjoyed watching Matt showcase the awesome performance of his Thunderbolt Competition Series AEIO-580 engine for thousands of aviation enthusiasts while performing his aerobatic routine.”

Lycoming launched Thunderbolt Engines in April 2006. Thunderbolt provides product offerings that include engines ranging from the rugged O-235 to the legendary IO-720. Customers may choose from a variety of available fuel systems, ignition systems, and performance enhancements including component balancing, cylinder flow matching, increased compression, tuned induction, and turbo-charging.
