2008 Lindbergh-Lycoming Grant Awarded to Dr. Ganesh G. Raman
Project to Focus on Noise Suppression using Ultrasonic Actuators
Oshkosh, WI - July 31, 2008 - Lycoming Engines, a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, is proud to join with the Lindbergh Foundation in announcing the 2008 Lindbergh-Lycoming Grant recipient - Dr. Ganesh G. Raman, an associate professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, IL. Dr. Raman has been awarded the 2008 Lindbergh-Lycoming Grant for his project entitled, "Ultrasonic Actuators for Quiet Aircraft."
This is the third annual Lindbergh-Lycoming grant to be awarded by the partnership between Lycoming Engines and the Lindbergh Foundation. The Lindbergh-Lycoming grant specifically funds aviation and aerospace innovation projects that focus on a balance between advancement in technology and preservation of the human and natural environment.
The noise from jet aircraft engines poses both potential psychological and physiological health hazards to millions of people who live and work in the vicinity of airports. Jet aircraft noise can also be a hindrance to economic development of a region as prevalent noise abatement techniques and procedures often restrict the maximum use of airports and air transportation, and can result in reduced payload capacity and fuel efficiency.
Dr. Raman's project is to develop a noise suppression technology that can be selectively activated and operated, for example, in the vicinity of airports, but turned off in cruise for fuel economy. The project employs an ultrasonic powered resonance tube intended to reduce audible jet engine noise with a minimal impact on performance. Dr. Raman has an extensive background in the research and design of noise suppression technology.
"We applaud Dr. Ganesh G. Raman for a project which promises to be a true advancement in technology and will benefit aviation, humanity and the environment," stated Lycoming Engines Senior Vice President and General Manager Ian Walsh. "In awarding the Lindbergh-Lycoming Grant each year, we select projects which promote the growth of the aviation industry, while respecting and preserving our environment."
Lindbergh Grants are made in amounts up to $10,580, a symbolic amount representing the cost of building Charles Lindbergh's plane, the Spirit of St. Louis, in 1927. The Lindbergh-Lycoming grant joins two organizations that have a vision for future advancements in technology as well as a dedication to aviation. The grant is Lycoming Engines' way of investing in the aviation community and supporting the profound work done by the Lindbergh Foundation.
The Lindbergh Foundation is a public 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Minnesota that supports technological solutions to improve our environment for a sustainable future. With a rich history in aviation, the Lindbergh Foundation and the Lindbergh Grants program have funded individuals who have put the concept of a nature/technology balance into action. Over 284 men and women in the U.S. and abroad have received more than $2.7 million since the Lindbergh Grants program began. To apply for Lindbergh-Lycoming Grant funding for July 2009, the application deadline is October 30, 2008.
